Claims by Indians & Notable Dutch Settlers, New York/New Jersey Land Deed
DS
A land deed signed for land in East New York, mentioning prior claims by Native Americans. 1p, measuring 12.75" x 16", New York, dated March 5, 1702. A deed between Anthony Brokholft and Arent Schuyler of New Jersey and Nickolas Bayard of New York with Mauris Mourissen. A payment of £2000 was paid by Mourissen for a tract or parcel of land and meadow in East New York known as "the Gaffel". It also appears that there were disputed claims to the land with local Native Americans which needed to be resolved before the land could be given to Mourissen. Signed at the bottom by Baryard, Brokholft, and Schuyler. The deed has flattened folds with some separations at the folds and paper loss. Repairs have been made with archival tape on the verso with only minor loss to the text. Light toning and foxing throughout. Some further paper loss at the edges. Boldly signed.

In part:

Nicholas Bayard (1644-1707 or 1709) was a slave trader who served as mayor of New York from 1685 to 1686. He was the nephew of Peter Stuyvesant (1610-1672), who served as the last Dutch director-general of the colony of New Netherland. Bayard received a license from the notoriously corrupt Governor Benjamin Fletcher in 1694 to buy 4,000 acres along the Schoharie Creek from the Native Americans, for some £100. When Fletcher chartered the purchase in 1695, the original 4,000 acres became a tract forty miles long and thirty miles broad on both sides of the Schoharie Creek, some 768,000 acres. The Natives were understandably furious and repudiated the deal. They luckily found an ally in Governor Bellomont, who replaced Fletcher in 1697 and revoked some of Fletcher's most outrageous land grants, including Bayard's. However, Bayard did not relinquish his claim on these lands and went to London to clear his title before the Lords of Trade.

Arent Schuyler (1662-1730) was a member of the influential Schuyler family (among the first settlers to New Netherland) and a surveyor, Native American trader, miner, merchant, and land speculator. He led negotiations with the Lenape population for the purchase of the land that would make up the Pompton Valley in New Jersey.
