The 48th PA Infantry was organized at Camp Curtain in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on October 1, 1861, with soldiers enlisting for a three-year period. The company was raised by Colonel James Nagel, whose name is listed at the top of the Muster Roll. Known as the "Schuylkill Regiment", the 48th PA saw a great deal of action from 1862 until 1864, with engagements at New Bern, Second Bull Run, Chantilly, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Knoxville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and the Crater. The regiment played an integral part at the Battle of the Crater, digging mine shafts under the Confederate lines and planting explosives beneath the fort. At the close of the war, the 48th PA briefly served in Washington, D.C. before being mustered out on July 17, 1865. William Winlack was a resident of Schuylkill County and enlisted on October 1, 1861, as a Captain. He survived the war and mustered out on September 30, 1864.
