J. Gurney & Son (1858-1874). Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1895) and his son Benjamin (1833-1899) were photographic "artists" and publishers with a business at 707 Broadway in New York City. Originally a jeweler in Saratoga, New York, Jeremiah Gurney was one of Samuel F. B. Morse's first students in 1840 to learn Daguerreian photography and established one of the first photography studios in the world, where he charged $5 for a daguerreotype portrait. He contributed to the photographic display at the Crystal Palace in London in 1853. His son Benjamin Gurney joined him in the business in 1858. His success reputedly inspired Mathew B. Brady to enter photography. Gurney is perhaps best known for taking a photograph of Abraham Lincoln in death in New York City.
