Civil War Military Register, Extremely Colorful Lithograph!

An A. Hoen & Company (Baltimore, Maryland) color lithograph of the Military Register of Company E, 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Light toning, scattered foxing and wrinkles, and a few repaired closed tears. Otherwise bright and colorful. Expected wear to frame, including an area of loss at lower left. Framed behind glass. Not examined out of frame. Overall frame size: 17.75" x 24.5" x .75".

The Military Register is profusely decorated with patriotic vignettes and inset roundels depicting various scenes on the battlefield and home front. Soldiers are depicted on horseback, around the campfire, and returning home; their families are shown receiving messages, praying for their loved ones' safety, and welcoming soldiers home. The register is divided into three columns at center, listing the names of privates, company officers, and field and staff who enlisted in the regiment.

The 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered in September 1862 for a nine-month-long term of service. It was one of eight regiments that enlisted following President Lincoln's call for soldiers. The volunteers were mostly from York County, Maine. They were assigned to Washington, DC and Virginia and served in a support role, mostly forming picket lines. Of the 949 soldiers who enlisted in the 27th, only 20 died during their term of enlistment; 19 from disease, and 1 from an accidental musket discharge. When the regiment's term expired in July 1863, soldiers were encouraged to reenlist in advance of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Of especial interest here is the Getchell family, which features prominently in the register. John Maxwell Getchell (1834-1902) enlisted as a private along with older brother Samuel and probable cousins Marcus and Albert. By the end of his term, however, John M. Getchell had been promoted to Captain of Company E.
