[CIVIL WAR.] Archive of 3 cartes-de-visite and 2 belt buckles, ca. 1861-1865. CDVs each 2.5" x 4". General toning and some edge wear. Belt buckles each 3.25" x 2.125" oval. One, very good; the other damaged top and bottom and lacking prong hooks on verso.

This small collection consists of cartes-de-visite and Union belt buckles from the Civil War.

Marcus L. French (1839-1872) was born in north-central Pennsylvania and became a clerk. He joined the 44th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as a sergeant in August 1861, became a second lieutenant in November 1861, and was promoted to captain in April 1862. He resigned in February 1863.

This CDV may be of Robert Henry Hall (1837-1914), who was born in Illinois and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1860. He served as 2nd lieutenant in the 5th U.S. Infantry (January-June 1861), 1st lieutenant in the 10th U.S. Infantry (June 1861-August 1863), captain in the 10th U.S. Infantry (August-November 1863), and brevet major from November 1863. He commanded the regiment in July 1864 and was wounded in the head in August 1864 at Globe Tavern on the Weldon Railroad in Virginia. He was promoted to brevet lieutenant colonel in October 1865. In 1866, he married Georgianna K. Foote, and they had at least three children. After service in the West, he served as an instructor of infantry tactics at West Point from 1871 to 1878, followed by more service in the West. He commanded troops during labor disturbances in the 1890s. He served in the early stages of the Spanish-American War in Florida in preparation for an expedition to Cuba, then commanded the regiment in the Philippines from 1899 to 1901 with the rank of brigadier general.

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
