Description:

Civil War General Robert E. Patterson the Younger Signature & Period Cdv

A card signed and inscribed by Civil War commander Robert Emmet Patterson the younger (1830-1906) mounted below a period black and white carte de visite photograph of him laid down on a stock display, both ca. 1860s. The card reads: "Robt. E. Patterson / Col 115 PA Vols. / Bvt. Brig Genl. U.S. Vols." The edges of the signed card show minor adhesive residue, else clean and bright, measuring 5" x 2.125." The carte de visite depicts Patterson standing in full military uniform in a Victorian photo studio, measuring 2.25" x 3.25." The mount is pencil-inscribed along the right edge. Overall size: 5.5" x 6.75."

Robert Emmet Patterson, the signer of this card, should not be confused with his father Robert Emmet Patterson (1792-1881), the Irish-born Mexican War and Civil War veteran. Robert Emmet Patterson the younger's older brother Francis Engel Patterson (1821-1862) was also a general during the Civil War.

The younger Robert Emmet Patterson graduated from West Point in 1851 and gained on-the-ground experience in the American West before organizing the 115th Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers in early November 1861. Volunteers in this unit attached to the Army of the Potomac pledged three years of service. The younger Patterson commanded the 115th until December 1862, when he resigned to recruit more soldiers on a full-time basis. During his twelve months of active service, the younger Patterson fought at the Battle of Malvern Hill; the Battle of Bristoe Station; the Battle of Second Manassas (Bull Run); the Battle of Chantilly; and the Battle of Fredericksburg. After young Patterson's discharge, the 115th Pennsylvania Infantry would see action at some of the most significant engagements of the Civil War, including the Battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and many others.
