Civil War Archive of 19 Letters and Documents, 1861 to 1864

A small archive of letters and documents, totaling 19 items, all Civil War dated from various soldiers and civilians about their experiences. Dating from 1861-1864, there are seventeen autograph letters signed and two pay orders from Saratoga Sprints. All have flattened folds and expected, varying degrees of toning, soiling, and foxing. All with bold signatures. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information. Overall very good.

Highlights from the archive include:
1. A.L. Sturtevant ALS to Edward, Washington, D.C., dated February 2, 1864. Advising that a letter of recommendation from Sumner and Governor Andrews would help secure a position for a third party, Frank.
2. Unsigned ALS to Brother Henry, West Durham, dated October 20, 1861. Providing news of friends in the army and of people in town joining up, as well as inquiring as to the inactivity of the Army.
3. Letter Press Copy from George J. Johnson , New York, dated November 23, n.y. Addressed to Major General Hancock, asking that he telegraph General Heintzelman to inform him that a former staff member has suddenly died and that a funeral is to be held in Boston.
4. S. F. Gibson ALS to friend Sam, Bethel, dated March 16, 1864. Thanking him for sending a gun and detailing how there are very few men who can still be recruited in Bethel. Women of the town are desperately awaiting their husbands' return.
5. E.C. Washburn ALS to friend Brown, Seminary Hospital in Georgetown, dated October 28, n.y. Relaying conditions of soldiers in the hospital and how they spend their time. Washburn mentions he has five rooms to oversee and that the large ward is nearly full.
6. James Parsons ALS to his sister Myranda, Arlington, Virginia, dated August 30, 1862. One month since enlisting, he is now camped at the former home of General Robert E. Lee. Talks of a rumor of the army capturing 2000 rebel prisoners.
7. Nettie Ellis ALS to her friend Frank. Westmoreland, dated May 2, n.y. Nettie writes of numerous local deaths and how soldiers in town are being mustered as fast as the government can.
8. C.M. Smith ALS to his brother and sister, Fulton, dated September 17, 1863. Writes of his time on furlough, and states he would rather be a farmer than a soldier.
9. J.D. Richardson ALS to a friend, Mountain Depot, dated June 8, 1863. Writes of the government seeking to have a draft again, and wondering what might happen if men refuse the draft.
10. James O. Johnson ALS to wife, Aboard the "Constitution", dated July 16, 1864. Leaving the front line and hoping to sail past the Rebel Battery. The new assignment is to guard prisoners.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
