Partly engraved document signed "Edwin M Stanton" as Secretary of War, 1 page, 15.5" x 18.75". Washington, July 1, 1864. On vellum. Filled out in manuscript (very light). Rippled, expertly mended on verso. Almost complete 2" diameter blue War Department seal affixed at top left. Patriotic vignettes of an eagle with wings spread at top center and battle flags, cannons, cannon balls, and regiment drum across the bottom. Not signed by Lincoln. Very good condition.

In part, "To all who shall see these presents greeting: Know Ye That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of Enoch Pearce I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him Surgeon of Volunteers in the service of the United States; to rank as such from the Ninth day of September eighteen hundred and Sixty three …"

Dr. Enoch Pearce (1832-1916) was Surgeon of the 61st Ohio Volunteer Infantry when he was appointed Surgeon in Chief of the First Brigade, Third Division, 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac, on January 3, 1863. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as Assistant Surgeon of United States Volunteers on September 2, 1863, and promoted by President Lincoln to Surgeon of United States Volunteers September 9, 1863 (by this document). In 1867, Pearce was appointed by President Andrew Johnson as Brevet-Lieutenant-Colonel United States Volunteers "for gallant and meritorious service, to date from March 13, 1865." Dr. Pearce was on the front in at least 20 battles, relieving the wounded.
