Canon Thomas Henry Irving was Vicar at St. Michael and All Angels in Hawkshead from 1909-1927. After the Influenza Epidemic of 1918, Irving concluded that there was a need for a trained nurse and was prepared to support the necessary fundraising. The District Nursing Association approved the Hawkshead District Nurse Association application in October 1919. The minimum subscription was set at 2 shillings 6 pence. Non-subscribers would pay 6 pence per "Queen's Nurse" visit. Helen Beatrix Potter Heelis, who had married William Heelis in 1913, was elected Treasurer of the local committee. She later served as Honorary Treasurer and acting Secretary of the Hawkshead and District Nursing Association.

Published in 1928, the year she signed this receipt, "Peter Rabbit's Almanac for 1929" (New York: Frederick Warne, 1928) was the first and only almanac Beatrix Potter ever wrote, though it was initially intended to be the first of a series. It was in a small book-format calendar, illustrated with a vignette title page and 13 color illustrations.
