Description:

Kai-shek Chiang

Chiang Kai-shek Signed Photo, Part of a Sensational Display!

A visually appealing collector's display prominently featuring a photo signed by Chinese nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975). The montage, which can easily be disassembled, also includes a First Day of Issue cover from October 10, 1945, and a postcard dated November 1941. With printed captions providing historical context. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Fraser's Autographs (London, England).

The lot is comprised of:

1. 3.75" x 5.75" semi-glossy black and white photograph of a smiling Kai-shek in uniform, signed by him in Chinese characters at lower left. Stamped "Photo by Hu Chung Hsien" verso. A few almost imperceptible gentle folds to edges and corners, else near fine.

2. First Day of Issue cover bearing four cancelled stamps featuring Kai-shek's portrait, and commemorating the Allied victory over Japan in 1945. The envelope's return address is pre-printed the "Astor House Hotel" and was sent through local mail to Shanghai, China. Near fine. 6.5" x 3.75".

3. Postcard bearing three cancelled 30th Anniversary of the Founding of the Republic of China stamps, including one Sun Yat-sen and two Martyrs. Sent from Tientsin by a Catholic priest to a Shanghai stamp company in November 1941; his partly typed and partly handwritten message can be found verso. Overall light toning. 5.5" x 3.5".

Chiang Kai-shek served as the President of the Republic of China between 1950-1975. He was an early ally of Sun Yat-sen, the first premier of the Kuomintang and the first president of the Republic of China, and a pivotal figure in China's twentieth-century nationalist movement. While Kai-shek is credited with modernizing China and resisting Japanese encroachment during the so-called Nanjing Decade preceding World War II, his vigorous persecution of Chinese Communists and dissidents has been condemned by some modern historians.
