Description:

Charming Royal Family Portrait: King George VI, Elizabeth, & Elizabeth II

An original signed royal portrait photograph of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mother), and Elizabeth II. The image measures 7.25" x 7.75", London, dated 1931. The bromide print shows a seated Elizabeth and George VI (known as Albert or "Bertie" to his family) with their daughter, Elizabeth II, standing between them. The image has been double mounted to the overall size of 11.5" x 14.25" and is signed on the smaller mat by both the king and queen as "Albert" and "Elizabeth". The image was taken in 1929 by Marcus Adams, so has also signed the mat below the image. The verso of the portrait bears the studio plate for Marcus Adams' Children's Studio, located in Piccadilly. Numbered "5122 FFFF." Some minor silvering to the image edges. Mat burn and minor toning to the mount. With bold signatures. Very attractive to display.

George VI, then Duke of York Albert Frederick Arthur George (1895-1952), was never meant to inherit the throne, but succeeded his brother Edward VIII, who abdicated on December 11, 1936. Prince Albert had married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923 and they had two daughters, Elizabeth (b. 1926) and Margaret (b. 1930). Upon his coronation, Albert assumed the regnal name "George VI" to emphasize continuity with his father and restore confidence in the monarchy. Albert successfully saw the country through the Second World War and renewed popularity in the monarchy during his reign. Upon his death on February 6, 1952, his elder daughter succeeded him as Queen Elizabeth II.
