Charmian Kittredge London (1871-1955) was a “New Woman” of the new century, a highly educated, independent, working woman. She met future husband Jack London (1876-1916) at a luncheon in 1900. Charmian was the real-life inspiration of several of Jack’s fictional characters. She edited and even contributed entire passages to Jack’s works. When her husband died of uremia at age 40, Charmian transitioned to managing and preserving London’s literary reputation. She wrote prefaces to many posthumous editions of Jack’s works, oversaw translation and copyright issues, and even negotiated screenplay rights. In 1921, Charmian published a two-volume biography of Jack London called "The Book of Jack London".
