Description:

Charles X

Large parchment document signed by last Bourbon king Charles X (1757-1836) as "Charles" in lower right corner. Also signed by ministers like Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals Jean Joseph Antoine de Courvoisier (1775-1835) as "Courvoisier" at center. Two parts of enormous green wax seal are suspended from braided red and green ribbons attached to bottom left corner. (The seal, embossed with the royal coat of arms and Charles's titles, once measured 4.75" in diameter judging from the wax impressions found on the document.) Docket information found in one corner verso. In very good to near fine condition, with expected stiff paper folds and two partial wax impressions. Document measuring 23.75" x 17".

Charles X issued this order regarding the inheritance of Nicolas Francois Vicomte Roussel d'Hurbal (1763-1849), one of his most devoted subjects, on November 26, 1829 from Paris. A grandiloquent heading decorated with fleur de lys at top reads: "Charles, by the grace of God, King of France and of Navarre, to all present and to all to come, greeting." Vicomte Roussel d'Hurbal had an impressive track record: he was a gentleman of the king's chamber, a lieutenant general in the French Army, the general inspector of the cavalry, a knight of Saint Louis, a commander of the orders of the Legion of Honor and Maria Theresa of Austria, and a Vicomte since 1823.

This document commanded that if the current Vicomte Roussel d'Hurbal died without descendants, that his title would pass on to his eldest nephew, Charles Francois Adolphe Courtois (born 1799) and his children, and if after him there were no descendants, to his second eldest nephew Charles Joseph Henry Courtois (born 1802). The necessary letters patent making the ruling official would be issued within six months of the decree. (Charles X would abdicate the throne just a few months after this, following the July Revolution.)

Charles X wanted to reverse the substantial social and political transformations that took place between the reigns of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII. This ultra-radical monarchist wanted to indemnify nobles for property lost during the French Revolution, and reinstitute primogeniture laws. He was deeply unpopular, and only ruled for six years.
