Charles Nordhoff, "Mutiny on the Bounty" Author, Heavily Annotated Baby Book Incl. Lock of his Hair!
Album

A very sweet late 19th C. scrapbook album related to Charles Nordhoff (1887-1947), co-author of the swashbuckling "The Bounty Trilogy" (1932-1934). Ca. 1887-1894. Various places. Designed and illustrated by Annie F. Cox, "Baby's Kingdom: Wherein May Be Chronicled As Memories For Grown-Up Days The Mother's Story of the Events, Happenings, and Incidents Attending the Progress of The Baby" (Boston: Lee and Shepard, Publishers, 1885). The brown leather covers are beautifully gilt-embossed on the spine and front, with decorative pastedown endpapers, and a gilt text block. Pen-inscribed on one of the front loose endpapers as: "For dear little Charlie Nordhoff, / with best love from Auntie Edith." Expected wear including toning, foxing, and isolated ink bleed-through and mat burn, else near fine. Unpaginated, with many colorful headpieces. 8.25" x 7.75" x 1." 12mo.

A dark blonde snippet of Nordhoff's hair, comprised of approximately 20 strands and measuring 1" is attached to the page entitled "A lock of baby's hair," with the additional manuscript notation, "Charlie's hair / a few days old." Also included are two baby pictures, "Charlie Nordhoff junior / 3 months + 2 weeks old / Berlin May 1887" and "Charles - in Germantown - February / 3 years old 1890."

Within the album are copious manuscript notations and reminiscences about Charlie's birth and babyhood, presumably in the hand of his mother, Sarah Cope Whitall Nordhoff, who has also included sparser information about his siblings Marmaduke, Margaret, Franklin, and Mary. Details about Charlie's experiences as the firstborn son seem to be particularly meticulous. Included are lists of baby gifts, accounts of first outings and first photographs, teething and weight schedules, etc.

Charles Nordhoff, along with James Norman Hall, wrote "The Bounty Trilogy" comprised of: "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1932); "Men Against the Sea" (1934); and "Pitcairn's Island" (1934). Both men lived for a time on Tahiti, the destination of Captain Bligh's "H.M.S. Bounty."
