Dr. Charles H. Mayo replied to New Jersey high school teacher Sharpless Dodson Green in this April 14, 1925 letter: “I am especially interested in school children and I wish I had time to prepare a letter for the High School group who have honored me by selecting me as their guardian … ”. Green frequently contacted notables of the day to engage with his high school-aged pupils, as he did so with Mayo. These famous authors, doctors, politicians, and personalities were asked to give life advice, or to serve as mentors.

Charles Horace Mayo (1865-1939) was one of the cofounders of the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Charles, along with his older brother William James Mayo (1861-1939) and seven other partners, formed a cooperative medical practice affiliated with nearby St. Mary’s Hospital around 1892. The private practice transitioned to a non-profit organization in 1919, and its campus expanded as its needs increased. In 1927, just one year after sending this letter to high school teacher S.D. Green, the Mayo Clinic opened its new Plummer building.

Today, the Mayo Clinic has a sterling reputation in medical research, patient care, and teaching. Original cofounder Charles H. Mayo shows his commitment to this last value, education, in this thoughtful 1925 letter.
