"--might possibly like to undertake your Locum-Tenancy. I am writing to tell him of it.

Always sincerely yours

CLDodgson."

Dodgson, more commonly known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll, is celebrated for his fantastical children's stories Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice Found There (1871). Carroll's imaginative storylines, word play, logic games, and anthropomorphic characters--all found in playful abundance in the Alice series--essentially established the "literary nonsense" genre. Carroll was extremely bright and multifaceted: he also wrote poetry, illustrated his work, became an expert photographer, dabbled in inventing, published logic and math treatises, and served as an Anglican deacon.
