A "short snorter" is paper currency signed by people traveling together on an aircraft. During World War II, short snorters were frequently signed by soldiers crossing the Atlantic to the war as well as crew members. Founded in 1888, the Engineers' Club is an organization for engineers or those connected to the field. Founded in 1888, it was located on West 40th Street off Fifth Avenue, New York City, from 1907-1979. Charles A. Lindbergh was a member.

Donald Hall (1898-1968) was Chief Engineer at Ryan Airplanes, Inc., and designed, with Lindbergh, Spirit of St. Louis. Vincent Burnett (1913-1989) was about to turn 14 when Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic in a non-stop solo flight in 1927. Inspired by the flight of Spirit of St. Louis, Burnett learned to fly and by the 1930s, he was doing aerobatic flying and became a member of the renowned "Flying Aces Air Circus," and touring the country. In World War II, Col. Burnett trained Air Force recruits, becoming technical adviser to Gen. Jimmy Doolittle after his 1942 raid over Tokyo. Burnett taught pilots how to improve combat flying techniques.
