Description:

Charles Lindbergh
n.p. [New York, NY], January 6, 1931
Charles Lindbergh Signed Photograph w/ Impeccable Provenance, Among the Finest We Have Seen
Signed photograph

A vintage, sepia-toned photograph of Charles Lindbergh, boldly signed and dated in the lower right corner: "Sincerely/ Charles A. Lindbergh/ 1/6/31". 1p, measuring 6" x 8", dated January 6, 1931, n.p. [New York, NY]. This image was sent to one R. H. Glennie, PTA president at Lindbergh Elementary School of Buffalo, NY after he had reached out to the aviator hoping for an autographed photo. Exhibits minor edge curling, with light bumping to corners and general handling wear throughout; isolated paper clip indentation found at upper left. Otherwise, near fine.

Together with a 1p TLS from Lindbergh's secretary Elizabeth Sheets dated April 22, 1931, explaining that her employer only signs original photographs and thus sends the offered example. Reading in part:

"…the enlarged photograph of Colonel Lindbergh has been received at this office.
Unfortunately we found that it was a colored reproduction of an original photograph, and much as your interest in having an artistic picture is appreciated, Colonel Lindbergh has made it a principle not to autograph any picture which is not an original photographic representation. He has asked me to express his regret that he is unable to comply with your request, and to say that he intends to send you an autographed photograph of himself as soon as he has located one."

A note in pencil in the letter's lower right corner reads "Large picture in hall of Lindbergh School", suggesting that Glennie, as head of the Parent-Teachers Association, had originally tried to acquire an autograph from the school's namesake on a photograph which hung in it's hall at the time of this note's creation.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
