Description:

Lindbergh Charles

Charles Lindbergh ANS less than 1 year before his death in Hawaii

1p ANS inscribed with 10+ words and signed by celebrated aviator Charles A. Lindbergh (1902-1974) as "Charles A. Lindbergh" at top. The watermarked pale blue stationery paper with deckled edges is in near fine condition with light expected paper folds and minor edge fading, the sheet measuring 5.75" x 7.75".

Charles A. Lindbergh dedicated this note "To Dr. Brooks Hoffman, With best wishes, Charles A. Lindbergh, Sept. 28, 1973" just eleven months before his death of lymphoma in August 1974. No specific place is recorded, but it is likely that Lindbergh penned this note at his home in Maui, Hawaii, where he resided the last years of his life.

Charles A. Lindbergh, a rather nondescript Midwestern air mail carrier, rocketed to celebrity after his record-breaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. Lindbergh helped found what would later become TWA in 1929, and legitimized the nascent American airline industry by developing rules and regs and even conducting publicity campaigns. In the 1930s, Lindbergh traveled around the world evaluating air power capabilities. Later, Lindbergh worked with Longines Watch Company to produce a navigation-friendly pilot's watch, and even invented a glass heart pump that facilitated heart surgery!
