Letter reads in part: "My dear Mr. Britton, Delighted to get your letter to hear from you all and that you are well… and delight to visit forbidden places it is the old history of Adam the forbidden fruits must be expected from both fellows I hope they enjoyed themselves. What a grand thing if she buys me some more which I hope she will do. She took time enough to think about it. Kind regards to Brodie & his bride the family . I hope they are well. Also Mussey, Hibbs Warry, Griffiths, Ronit (George) Blackburn, Pickwith. I am still thin and Jim wants to interest. I daily think of you all and having the…of the Gihm here at Jerusalem coming out of the…Hill also in the course of way although being down to report to him ... Dyer almost the ... about the Tortoises. It is splendid and I personally am very much obliged. I wish I could tell you all about this end of the Gihm but I fear it would take to long. I cannot go to see the ridge which divides the Dead Sea from the Red Sea. She sent them an angry with us for executing the ... of Professor Palmer. The Dead Sea was the orifice where the waters of flood meet with water of earth. How is Mussey? You do not say. How are the Davidsons? I hope well. Do you ever discuss the Garden of Eden? I find great ... Which is I have found this place where the ... person was under, was taken. The pit out of which he was dragged. He was ... back him after the fall of till the actual ground out of which he was taken. You are in him, so you are him also. It is curious to find the old tradition which is supported by the scriptures. Were the people at ... interested with what you sent them ... tell me. Present my kind regards to Mr. Barkley. He is a dear fellow I know did good work in Soweto(?) land. I hope he Chris Barkley like the place. Goodbye. Kindest regards to you all.

Yours sincerely, C. E. Gordon [p.s.] Ericken, in spite of his one arm, the loss of which he loves to describe, is of a very inquiring nature of mind. I know him of old. Remember me to him."

After his travels, Gordon returned to the Sudan to evacuate Egyptian forces from Khartoum, which was threatened by Ahmad al-Mahdi and his Sudanese rebels. On January 26, 1885, the rebels broke into the city killing Gordon and the other defenders two days before British relief forces arrived.
