Description:

Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) Charles 1832 - 1898 Charles Dodgson ALS to his summer home get-a-way.

Single page ALS, 7" x 4.5", dated "Nov 1/95", and signed by Charles Dodgson as "C.L. Dodgson". Expected folds, else clean and near fine with strong contrast to the ink and a bold signature.

A superb example of an ALS by Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll), penned to Mrs Dyer. As described in his journal, Dodgson made a decision to spend his summer holidays at 7 Lushington Road, Eastbourne, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dyer. He took lodgings with them from July to October and this became his regular arrangement throughout this time period, and for the rest of his life. This enabled him to work on his publications and projects while at the same time allowing him to enjoy the delights of a popular Victorian seaside resort; the beach, the promenade, the pier, and the entertainment provided for the summer season. His letter is shown in full below:

"Dear Mrs. Dyer,

Thanks for the bills. I shall be glad to give Emma a chiffonier as a wedding present, as you advise, + about £2-10-0 will do very well as the price. Would you kindly choose + order it + let me know what it will cost/ Will it do to send you a checque or would postals be more convenient.

Very Truly yours, C.L. Dodgson"

Best known for his classic "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" published in 1865, followed by "Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There". At the time of this letter, in 1895, several years before his death, Dodgson was attempting a literary comeback almost 30 years after publication of his masterpieces. Carroll produced a two-volume tale of the fairy siblings Sylvie and Bruno entwining two plots set in two alternative worlds, one set in rural England and the other in the fairytale kingdoms of Elfland, Outland, and others. The fairytale world satirizes English society, and more specifically the world of academia. Sylvie and Bruno came out in two volumes and is considered a lesser work, although it has remained in print for over a century.
