Charles Dickens Signed Letter Re: a "Household Words" Submittal by Hollingshead

Bi-fold autographed letter signed, 4.5" x 7." Dated "Gad's Hill, Fourth October 1857." Signed by Charles Dickens as "Charles Dickens." Penned to front page with balance of pages blank. Mounting remnants present to verso of last page. Page is lightly toned with expected mailing folds. Near fine with strong contrasting ink.

A fantastic letter written by Dickens to journalist John Hollingshead (1827-1904), who continued to submit pieces to Dickens and would eventually become a major contributor to Household Words, an English weekly magazine edited by Dickens in the 1850s. He writes regarding his submission for Household Word "I don't think there is enough in this paper to separate it from some other similar narratives (more or less) that have appeared in Household Words. Twenty shillings in the pound I with pleasure return for insertion…"

In 1857 he sent to 'Household Words,' a sketch of city life, called 'Poor Tom, a City Weed.' The article pleased the editor, whose sentiment and style Hollingshead emulated, and he joined the staff. He was a voluminous contributor of graphic articles, chiefly descriptive of current incident and of out-of-the-way scenes of London life.
