Lightly toned with center fold. Matted together with a lovely engraving of Dickens signed in graphite by the artist, T. Johnson along the lower margin. Engraving with faint pale foxing. Matted to an overall size of 21" x 15.75."

A lovely letter to John Hollingshead, a young writer and contributor to Household Words, a weekly magazine edited by Dickens. Dickens writes, "I am doubtful as to the twenty shillings in the sound, and should like to take time to consider it. I accept the other paper with great pleasure. I have called it 'Poor Tom. A City Weed' - have made an occasional retraction in a word or the setting out of a paragraph - and have added a parenthesis towards the close, which I hope carries out your meaning with a slight, affecting touch. You will judge for yourself, in going over the proof which I direct the Printers to send you. When you correct it, will you point the sentences so as to make them very plain to the eye? I am charmed with the paper, and think it extremely good."

"Poor Tom - A City Weed" was one of the first short stories Hollingshead submitted to Household Worlds. Hollingshead found great mentorship in Dickens, and referred to him as "my master" in his memoirs. Hollingshead would go on to become a noted journalist and theater manager. He is credited with bringing together Gilbert and Sullivan together for the first time in 1871.

A very handsome set, presents well.
