Charles Dickens ALS  with a 1871 Reprint of ''The Strange Gentleman''

Charles Dickens bi-fold autograph letter signed upon his Gads Hill Place letterhead. Dated "19 December 1865", and signed by Charles Dickens in full signature, "Charles Dickens", with his distinctive flourish.  Penned to recto of first page, balance of pages blank. Damp staining. Professional archival strengthening along the folds. Accompanied by a 1871 reprint of ''The Strange Gentleman'', Dickens' first play to be performed. In soft wrappers, play measures 5'' x 7.75''. Very good condition.

Charles Dickens writes to a Mr. Hudson, " …find me at my office, 26 Wellington Street, on Friday at 12, or on Saturday at the same hour''

The first of Dickens's plays to be publicly performed, although not the first to be written, and a runaway success. Harley had asked Dickens to write a one-act farce with an amusing part in which Harley himself could appear, and Dickens began to turn one of his 'Sketches', 'The Great Winglebury Duel', into a play: it is a conventional farce of cross-purposes and confused identities, but its elaborate misunderstandings, though mechanically arranged, are ingenious, and it is easy to see that they would be ludicrous enough in the hands of skilled actors"

Dickens famously disavowed the play later in life as well as the story upon which it was based; in a November 13, 1843 letter he explained that "[B]oth these things were done without the least consideration or regard to reputation. [...] I wouldn't repeat them for a thousand pounds apiece, and devoutly wish them to be forgotten" (The Letters of Charles Dickens, 3:598). De Ricci, p. 171 (note). Gimbel B41.
