Description:

Dickens Charles 1812 - 1870 Charles Dickens, ALS, in first printing of "Bleak House", bound by Sangorski & Sutcliff.

Unique one of a kind binding of "Bleak House" by Charles Dickens. First printing, FIRST STATE, published by Bradbury and Evans, London 1853. Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliff with a unique ALS signed and scripted by Charles Dickens inlaid to a page within the book, located as the page following the half title page. The ALS is dated "Friday Twenty First December 1866", and is signed by Dickens with his usual flourish accompanying his initials of "CD". First edition, FIRST STATE with the requisite three typographical errors present: p. 19, line 6: "elgble"; p. 209, line 23: "chair" instead of "hair"; and p. 275, line 22: "counsinship" instead of "cousinship".

The book is currently out of the case with the front and rear leather covers detached from the spine. The spine has raised bands ruled in gilt with some of the external leather missing. The book could easily be rebacked or recased and reassembled to include new end papers. Corner chipping ranging from extensive to slight, to the pages up to the True First Page of the book starting with Chapter One. The Sangorski and Sutcliff end papers are largely in poor shape with large missing areas. Bound to a size of 5.5" x 8.5".

The book contains an incredible ALS on his Higham by Rochester, Kent letterhead, 4.5" x 7" inlaid to a sheet to a size of 5" x 8.25". Faded handling marks with a few stray ink spots. The letter states in part:

"If you take the London Chatham Dover Express from Rochester ... from Victoria Station at 4:20 on Monday, I think you will find Charley and Layard - in the rain, coming down here ...

CD"

A highly unique FIRST state example of this title with a lovely ALS bound into the book.
