Charles Dickens ALS During Trip to Edinburgh, Awarded the Freedom of the City
ALS

An autograph letter signed by Charles Dickens while traveling in Scotland. 1p, measuring 4.5" x 7", Royal Hotel, Edinburgh, dated June 28, 1841. Signed "Charles Dickens" and addressed to George Jerdan Esquire. Dickens informs Jerdan that his travel plans are limited in such a way that it will be impossible to meet with him. With flattened mail folds and moderate, uneven toning. Some slight warping to the paper. Boldly signed.

The letter reads in full:
"I am heartily obliged to you for your kind Invitation, forwarded to me through your brother William, and write to thank you for it – though I very much regret to add that the arrangements I have made and the short time I can spare from London, prevent my seeing you, as I should have desired."

Charles Dickens had visited Edinburgh June 22 to July 4, 1841 and had numerous social events to attend. A dinner was given in his honor on June 25, and he was awarded the Freedom of the City on June 29. During this time in Scotland, he also wrote "Master Humphrey's Clock", Nos 69 and 70.

George Jerdan (1786-1849), younger brother of William Jerdan, was a writer and attorney. His brother, William, was the editor in London of the Literary Gazette and an early contributor to Bentley's Miscellany, an English literary magazine for which Dickens served as an editor.
