Charles Dickens 2x Signed Letter Addressed to Leading Homeopathic Doctor
ANS

A 1p autograph letter twice signed by British novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870), once as "CD" at the conclusion of the letter; and once as "Charles Dickens" on the integral address leaf. "Saturday" inscribed on bifold paper with an integral address leaf. A blind-embossed stationery mark, "London Superfine," is located at upper right, and some edges are deckled. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, and minor staining corresponding to the seal verso. Silk mounting tabs are discretely positioned along the top edge. Encapsulated and not examined out of the mount. The size of the letter is approximately 2.75" x 3.5" while the overall size of the mount is 3.5" x 4.5." Comes with a sepia-colored full-length printed image of Dickens, 6" x 7.5." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Signature House (Bridgeport, West Virginia.)

Charles Dickens wrote this letter to his close friend and homeopathic physician Dr. Frederick Hervey Foster Quin (1799-1879), who was one of the most prominent exponents of homeopathic medicine in Victorian England. Dr. Quin had many zealous patients and converts among royal, aristocratic, and celebrity circles, including Queen Victoria's uncle, the future Leopold I of Belgium. Quin was instrumental in founding the British Homeopathic Society in 1844, as well as establishing the London Homeopathic Hospital in 1850.

In the letter, Dickens provides information about the seating arrangement of an unknown meeting. Dickens was involved in the leadership of many charitable and philanthropic organizations; perhaps this was a meeting of one of them.

In full:

"My Dear Quin. At the right hand corner on entering the room, where the chairman's table joins the corner table at right angles, Professor Ferguson will find his name, next to Daniel Whittle Harvey

The identity of the "Professor Ferguson" mentioned in Dickens's letter is unclear, but Daniel Whittle Harvey (1786-1863) was a Radical politician, editor of the "Sunday Times" newspaper, and longtime Commissioner of the City of London Police from 1839-1863.
