A rather nondescript Midwestern air mail carrier, Lindbergh had become an overnight celebrity after his record-breaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927. During the 33.5-hour-long journey, "Lucky Lindy" traveled over 3,600 miles aboard the Spirit of St. Louis, braving fog, ice, and fatigue. For his aviation feat, Lindbergh received the $25,000 Orteig cash prize and ebullient international and national accolades.

Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis reunited to complete a lengthy publicity tour once he returned to the United States. Between July 20-October 23, 1927, Lindbergh visited 82 cities in the contiguous United States, beginning in the East Coast and working his way west. Lindbergh flew from Providence to Boston on July 22, 1927, where perhaps he had the opportunity to thank the Senators for their award. This was just one of many decorations Lindbergh received: President Calvin Coolidge awarded him the Distinguished Flying Cross in June 1927, and the U.S. Congress gave him the Medal of Honor in December 1927.

Although most of these politician-signers are not widely recognized today, they dominated the early-twentieth-century political scene in Massachusetts. Wellington Wells served as President of the Massachusetts State Senate between 1925-1928, after which he was succeeded by document co-signer Gaspar G. Bacon (1886-1947). Bacon later served as 51st Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts between 1933-1935. Co-signer Erland F. Fish (1883-1942) succeeded Bacon to lead the State Senate between 1933-1934.
