Chaim Weizmann Writes a Journalist Who Had Immigrated to Palestine in 1898

Typed Letter Signed “Ch. Weizmann” in English, one page, 5” x 6.5”, museum quality framed and matted to 18" x 14" . Oakwood, 16 Addison Crescent, W.14 [London], December 23, 1932. To Aron G. Hermoni, Paris. On blue stationery with letterhead engraved in red. Folds, not near signature. Fine condition.

In full, “I am extremely sorry, but it is still impossible for me to say exactly when I shall next be in Paris. For the time being, I am kept exceedingly busy with my work here; as soon as I succeed in making myself a little freer, I shall take up the matter which we discussed together. Meanwhile, if there is anything I can do from here to be of assistance, I count on you to let me know about it.”

On December 28, 1932, Hermoni replied to this letter and on January 6, 1933, Weizmann wrote to him, in part, “I do not at the moment know of any suitable post which is vacant, either in France, or here, or in Palestine, but I shall keep my eyes open, and if I hear of anything I will surely let you know at once ... I will be in Paris toward the end of next week.”

Aron G. Hermoni (1882-1960), a Lithuanian-born teacher and journalist, had settled in Palestine in 1898 and was now writing articles in publications in Paris in Hebrew. He favored Hebrew as the national language of the Jewish people, not Yiddish.

On January 7, 1933, at the annual conference of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain in London, Weizmann declared “Palestine is in an exceptional position, registering no unemployment, and there is even room for new immigrants. The steady flow of immigrants into the country is calculated at slightly over 1,000 monthly. These two factors are almost unique in the world, for countries everywhere are bolting their doors and barring their gates against immigrants and suffering from the terrible burden and scourge of unemployment...” Three weeks later, on January 30, 1933, (der fuhrer) became Chancellor of Germany, and the immigration to Palestine of German Jews began to steadily increase.
