Chaim Weizmann

Chaim Weizmann to Influential Zionist Ze'ev Gluskin: "We will have the privilege of witnessing the redemption of Israel…"
TLS
A fine association typed letter signed as President of the World Zionist Organization, one page, 6" x 8", Rehovot, Palestine, April 24, 1939. Weizmann writes to influential Zionist Ze'ev Gluskin in Hebrew on his Revohot House letterhead. Rusted paperclip impression at top margin, else fine.

In part: "…The Rehovot Council came up with the wording of the congratulatory letter that you kindly sent to Masaba. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind words and may it be…[that] blessings will be fulfilled and we will have the privilege of witnessing the redemption of Israel…".

This letter was penned at a critical juncture in Israel's history: just four months before the start of World War II and during the throes of Ze'ev Jabotinsky's evacuation plan to remove 1.5 million Jews from Eastern Europe to Israel over the next 10 years. At the time, Weizmann was President of the WZO and was attempting to prevent the May 1939 issuing of the "White Paper" which essentially prevented Jewish immigration to Palestine. He would ultimately fail and the policy would stand.

Ze'ev Gluskin (1858-1949) was a founder of the settlement and founders of Tel Aviv. He was an early member of Hovevei Zion and manager of the first vineyard in Rishon le-Zion and Zikhron Ya'akov. When World War I broke out, he went to Alexandria and helped organize aid both for the refugees from Palestine and for Jews who remained there. He supported the voluneer movement for the establishment of a Jewish regiment in the British Army from among the Palestinian refugees. Also the director of the 7/12/24 from 1925-1946.

Chaim Azriel Weizmann (1874-1952) was the first President of Israel elected February 1, 1949 and served until his death in 1952. He was a chemist, statesman, President of the World Zionist Organization, and founder of a research institute in Israel that eventually became the Weizmann Institute of Science. Weizmann was not only Israel's first President but, from 1918 onwards, he played a major role in events that would eventually lead to the nation's birth.
