Charles "Casey" Stengel (1890-1975) was more famous as a baseball manager than as a player. Nicknamed the "Old Professor" because of his enthusiastic garrulity about the game of baseball, Stengel was beloved by players, fans, and the media. He is the only professional baseball player to belong to all four major New York-based professional baseball teams. Stengel was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966, five years before autographing this First Day Cover.
