Description:

Carl Sandburg TLS & Large Companion Photo

A lot comprised of a typed letter signed by American writer Carl Sandburg (1878-1967), as well as a framed photograph of Sandburg playing the guitar. The photograph is matted and framed behind glass and measures 15.5" x 19.5" x 1" overall.

The items are:

1. A 1p typed letter signed by Sandburg as "Carl Sandburg" near center. Written at Sandburg's home Connemara Farms in Flat Rock, North Carolina on August 4, 1948 on custom stationery paper. Expected wear including a single horizontal paper fold and minor envelope flap ghost impressions, else near fine. The letter measures 6.25" x 6.75." Comes with a stamped and postmarked transmittal envelope.

Sandburg wrote his correspondent, Ralph Hammond, in part: "Of a certainty those photographs were duly autographed and put in the mails addressed to you. Regrets that they have been lost or mislaid. Should you send on like prints we will do our best again…"

Ralph Hammond (1916-2010) was an Alabama native who in 1948 was then serving as press secretary and speech writer of Alabama Governor Jim Folsom. The author of at least two non-fiction books and fifteen books of poetry, Hammond was nominated Alabama Poet Laureate from 1992 to 1995.

2. A glossy, black and white photograph of Sandburg playing a Kay guitar, displayed on a raised mount and matted and framed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. The mat is pencil inscribed "Carl Sandburg" and "by Scott, DeMotte & Perry, Inc" along the bottom margin. Notations verso indicate the photograph was professionally framed in 1978. The actual photograph measures 7.5" x 9.75" while the frame measures 15.5" x 19.5" x 1" overall.

Carl Sandburg acquired his first guitar at age 32 and spent the rest of his life playing American folk songs and other "down home" music. Sandburg's contemporaries likened him to a twentieth-century troubadour, yet he was also a musicologist. Sandburg's collection of American songs was published in 1927 as "The American Songbag," with a new edition published in 1950.

The advertising photography firm of Scott, DeMotte, & Perry (named after company principals John Englehardt Scott, Edward L. DeMotte, and W. Horace Perry) was active in the Montgomery, Alabama area from 1947.
