Description:

Sandburg Carl 1878 - 1967

Carl Sandburg signs a short TLS two years after publishing epic poem "The People, Yes".

5.5" x 3.25" postcard signed by American author Carl Sandburg as "Carl Sandburg" in black fountain pen verso. The poet's short TLS reads: "Dear Mr. Moore, Thank you for so kindly a note worth having and keeping - ". The postcard, postmarked from Harbert, Michigan on April 16, 1938, bears a canceled 1 cent Thomas Jefferson stamp, and is addressed to one "John A. Moore, 410 East 17th st., Brooklyn, N.Y.". A circa 1978 commemorative Carl Sandburg 13 cent stamp was affixed to the reverse later. In near fine condition, with a dark and bold signature.

Over his long and distinguished literary career, Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) wrote poetry, historical biographies, children's books, and essays exploring the American -- and specifically the Midwestern -- experience. This postcard, addressed to an unknown recipient in Brooklyn, dates from the author's years in Michigan, where the author relocated in 1930. It also dates from the period immediately after Sandburg published his book-length epic poem The People, Yes. Sandburg's next project, a biographical study of Abraham Lincoln, would be published a year later in 1939. Sandburg had become famous after the 1914 publication of "Chicago", in which he compares the city to a muscle-bound day laborer.
