Captain Noble Benedict Signed 1776 Receipt for Arms for New Recruits
MDS

Revolutionary War. Manuscript Document Signed, "Noble Benedict Capt," 1p, on watermarked laid paper measuring 7.75" x 4", Danbury, Connecticut, August 13, 1776. Docketing at verso. Flattened folds with minor separation at left. Small hole at upper portion not affecting any text. Light toning and scattered foxing. In very good plus condition.

Captain Noble Benedict signs a receipt for guns, bayonet belt & scabbard, and cartridge boxes, "for the use of new recruits in my Company in Colonel Bradley Regiment."

Captain Benedict's company was part of the regiment commanded by Colonel David Waterbury organized in April 1775 in response to the Lexington Alarm. In June 1775, after the regiment was adopted into the Continental Army, it marched to New York City where it joined troops from that state on a northward march toward Canada, where they helped lay siege to Fort St. Jean. This forced Sir Guy Carleton to evacuate Montreal, which Continental troops entered unopposed on November 13, 1775. It would appear that Noble's company remained behind at Fort St. Jean to hold the post during the American operations in Canada. At the end of December 1775, the 5th Connecticut terms of enlistment expired and Noble and his company departed Canada for Connecticut. Noble Benedict would later be captured at the surrender of Fort Washington in 1776.

Philip Burr Bradley (1738-1821) was colonel of a Connecticut state regiment that recently had been sent to New York to reinforce George Washington's army. Bradley took command of the 5th Connecticut Regiment on January 1, 1777 and served as its colonel for four years before resigning his commission. In September 1789, Washington appointed Bradley Federal Marshal of Connecticut.

John McLean (1737-1805) was a Scottish immigrant who arrived in America in 1757. A wealthy merchant and landowner in and around Danbury, Connecticut, McLean was loyal to the Continental Army. He served as Town Selectman during the Revolutionary War.
