Letters to Sir William Johnson requesting a Captain's commission and an appointment to the "Indian department in Canada".

Comprises two letters to Sir William Johnson:

(1) Col. Isaac Swits. Manuscript letter signed: "Isaac Swits," 1 page, 7"x 12", Albany, Sept. 20, 1770. Original spelling. In part: "I Recd your kind favour of the 4th of August Past and as the Leut Colo John Wenna was not in Town being obliged to make this Delay of answering you before and there is no other Captain within the Limitts of the City that Mr Abram Clayler, but there is other officers as Lieut that has never been Captain yet whome have had Commissions. Since the year 1753, of Whome Jacob Lanving Junr is the Eldest Lieutn but Leving that to your own judgement as they have Never been Captains yet... ." Integral leaf addressed: "To Sir William Johnson Bart/Major Gennerall of the Norderen/District of Militia/att/Johnston Hall." Noted at top: "On his Majestys Service." Three line docket in Sir William Johnson's hand on integral leaf. Partial separation at lower horizontal fold.

(2) Capt. James Stevenson. Manuscript letter signed: "Jas. Stevenson," 2pp, 7.5" x 9", Albany, Dec. 6, 1773. Original spelling. In part: "I should have wrote you on my arrival but was oblig'd to accompany Col. Christie as far as Saratoga. Mr. Adams promis'd to acquaint you that Capt Campbell was endeavouring to get appointed for the Indian department in Canada... ." Two line docket in Sir William Johnson's hand on integral sheet separated from letter. Minor separation at edges of two horizontal folds; blank lower right corner missing. Sir William Johnson, 1st Baronet was the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1755-1774. He served on the Governor's Council in New York and earned the rank of Major General in the British forces during the French and Indian War.
