Camille Saint-Saëns Autograph Musical Quotation

This unusual document contains a single line of music of four measures and the autograph of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns with the year.

CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS, Autograph Document Signed, 1906. 1 p., 5.375" x 8.5". Some toning; very good. Ex. Autograph book of Detroit pianist Kathleen S. Trowbridge, the volume is the result of a lifetime of collecting. She obtained most from her own correspondence or attendance at musical and theatrical performances in Detroit, but she also benefited from private school teachers who wrote to prominent acquaintances and received signatures for Trowbridge and the generosity of descendants of Senator Lewis Cass of Michigan. Her cousin Donald M. Dickinson was Postmaster General during the second Grover Cleveland administration, giving Trowbridge access to the White House, where she gained a letter from First Lady Frances Cleveland and access to other influential people. Many other items and the balance of the book are included in this auction.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was born in Paris and became a piano prodigy, giving performances for small audiences from the age of five. He made an official public debut when he was ten. He was talented in other subjects and became an accomplished amateur astronomer and amateur poet. He gained admission to the Paris Conservatoire in 1848 and left in 1853 to take a position as an organist at a Parisian church. In 1858 he became the organist at the official church of the Empire, where Hungarian composer Franz Liszt heard him and declared Saint-Saën's the greatest organist in the world. From 1861 to 1865, Saint-Saëns taught organ and piano at a school in Paris. He resumed performing and composing with renewed energy after leaving the school. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he served in the National Guard, then escaped to a brief exile in England during the Paris Commune in 1871. He was one of the founders of the Société Nationale de Musique in 1871. In 1875, he married Marie-Laure Tuffot, who was the sister of one of his pupils and less than half his age. The couple had two sons, who died in infancy, but their marriage did not survive much longer; he left her in 1881. A patron left him a large legacy in 1877 to allow him to focus on composition. He began to travel extensively, ultimately visiting twenty-seven countries, most frequently Germany, England, and Egypt. Among his most important works are his symphonies; symphonic poems, including Danse Macabre (1874); piano concertos; Christmas oratorio (Oratorio de Noël, 1858); and chamber pieces, including his most famous work The Carnival of the Animals (1887).
