Camille Pissarro ALS Re: His Son's Health the Same Year He Painted Jardin des Tuileries Series

A 1p autograph letter in French signed by Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) as "C. Pissarro" near center right. Written at 204, Rue de Rivoli, Paris, France on December 12, 1899 on a single leaf of cream laid paper once bifold but now unevenly torn along the right margin. Expected wear including light paper folds, else near fine. 4.5" x 7.125." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Pissarro addressed this letter to his son Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro (1878-1952) regarding the health of another son, Georges Henri (Manzana) Pissarro (1871-1961). Pissarro also mentions his only surviving daughter Jeanne Pissarro (1881-1948) in the letter. Jeanne's nickname was Cocotte, literally "casserole."

Translated in full, with original punctuation and style:

"Paris
204 rue de Rivoli
12 X 99

My dear Rodolphe

Georges continues to suffer from his operation, he is not however worse according to what Cocotte tells me, the Doctor Leon Simon is satisfied with his condition. he is very weak as you would imagine, and it will require several days for him to reestablish himself. Tomorrow we will see him and I will write you a few words.

We embrace you

C. Pissarro

when he gets completely better he will be able to have visits I will let you know, for the moment it would be better to avoid emotion."

Camille Pissarro wrote this letter from the large apartment he rented at 204, Rue de Rivoli in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. The flat was ideally situated between the Musée du Louvre and the Place de la Concorde. From its windows, one could see many Parisian landmarks including the Jardin des Tuileries, les Invalides, and l'Église de Sainte-Clothide. Pissarro was so enchanted with this view that he depicted it 14 times between 1898-1900 in what is known as the Tuileries Gardens series (see an example of one of this series attached.)
