Calvin Coolidge TLS Re: 1927 Geneva International Economic Conference

A 1p typed letter signed by 30th U.S. President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933), as "Calvin Coolidge" at center. February 23, 1927. [Washington, D.C.] On watermarked paper with "The White House / Washington" embossed in blue at the letterhead. Expected flattened transmittal folds and a few extra wrinkles. Pencil inscribed by a former collector at lower right. Scattered smudges. The stationery was once bifold, as indicated by the slightly abraded left edge. Else near fine. 6.875" x 8.875."

President Coolidge wrote this letter to U.S. Senator from Arkansas Joseph T. Robinson (1872-1937) regarding the U.S. delegation to the 1927 International Economic Conference, scheduled to convene just a few months later, in May 1927 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Coolidge wrote in part:

"I want to thank you for your letter of February 21st, in which you suggest the appointment of Honorable Edward N. Hurley on the Economic Conference at Geneva. I know Mr. Hurley and I have a very high regard for him. You may be sure that I shall give his name earnest consideration…"

Edward Nash Hurley (1864-1933), a Chicago entrepreneur with an engineering background, had becoming increasingly involved in politics during the Wilson administration. Hurley had served as Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission from July 1916 to January 1917. During World War I, Hurley served as Chairman of the U.S. Shipping Board.

President Coolidge did not select Edward N. Hurley to attend the International Economic Conference, for the latter's name is not found on Chairman of the American Delegation Henry M. Robinson's official list of "The Personnel of the American Delegation." The International Economic Conference took place from May 4-23, 1927 in Geneva. 50 countries sent delegations. The League of Nation countries were in the majority, but the non-member United States and Soviet Union were also represented. Over 250 delegates and experts in agriculture, industry, economics, finance, and government attended, Hurley not among them.
