Coolidge Calvin

Hampshire County National Bank check #1999 dated October 10, 1910 made payable to “Leonard Cox” in the amount of $7.00, signed by then lawyer and future 30th U.S. President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) as “Calvin Coolidge” in black pen. The cream-colored check has a “Calvin Coolidge, Lawyer” printed letterhead at left. Endorsed verso and stamped recto and verso. Graded by PSA/DNA as “NM - MT 8”. Check measures 8.25” x 3.375” and is contained within a slab measuring 12.375” x 5.5”.

Vermonter Calvin Coolidge moved to western Massachusetts to attend Amherst College, and he would live in the nearby industrial center and college town of Northampton, Massachusetts for the rest of his life. Coolidge apprenticed at the law firm of fellow Amherst College alumni Hammond & Field. Coolidge was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1897 and opened his own practice in Northampton a year later; this check thus dates about ten years into Coolidge’s successful commercial law career.

Coolidge set aside his practice to engage in politics, first as a William McKinley campaign aide, and then as a city councilman, state congressman and senator, and mayor of Northampton. He entered the national political arena after serving as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Massachusetts. “Silent Cal” was 29th U.S. President Warren G. Harding’s running mate and assumed the presidency after Harding’s death of a heart attack.
