Calvin Coolidge scare ALS predating presidency

1p ALS by future 30th U.S. President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) written on the back of a William McKinley commemorative postcard. Inscribed and signed by Coolidge as "Calvin Coolidge" verso. The front of the pre-stamped postcard features a lunette portrait of the recently assassinated McKinley at right, and a matching lunette depicting a patriotic eagle at left. Bearing philatelic markings from Northampton, Massachusetts and Newport, Vermont from mid-May 1903. In near fine condition, with overall toning and light expected weathering, overall measuring 5.5" x 3.25."

Calvin Coolidge wrote fellow lawyer J.W. Redmond on May 13, 1903 from his offices in Northampton, Massachusetts: "Dear Sir. - Did you get the letter and check for $12 sent April 29? If so will you please answer the inquiries I made. Yours Calvin Coolidge, Northampton Mass. May 13 1903."

Vermonter Calvin Coolidge moved to western Massachusetts to attend Amherst College, and he would live in the nearby industrial center and college town of Northampton, Massachusetts for the rest of his life. Coolidge was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1897 and opened his own practice in Northampton a year later; this ALS thus dates about 5 years into Coolidge’s successful commercial law career.

Historical records indicate that Coolidge's correspondent J.W. Redmond was practicing law well into the late 1910s. Redmond served as Counsel for the Central Vermont Railway, and was also on the Vermont Board of Railroad Commissioners. It is likely that Coolidge's inquiries stemmed from this shared area of interest: commercial law.

Coolidge had already begun transitioning into politics by 1903. (In fact, Coolidge served as a campaign aide to William McKinley, the assassinated president whose portrait decorated this postcard.) “Silent Cal” became President in 1923 and served until 1929.
