Description:

Coolidge Calvin 1872 - 1933

Calvin Coolidge DS five months before Massachusetts gubernatorial election, handsomely presented!

Check signed by 30th U.S. President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1930) as "Calvin Coolidge" handsomely displayed at center of black, white, and red beveled mat also featuring a printed portrait and engraved plaque. Mat overall measures 11.875" x 12".

Coolidge endorsed this watermarked patterned tan check (#84) from the Hampshire County National Bank in the amount of $2.00 to Luke R. Reddick from Northampton, Massachusetts on June 28, 1918. Upper left corner perforated with cancellation marks. Coolidge's signature is precise and clear, with characteristic figure 8 shaped "C"s. Check is in very good to near fine condition, with a small tear to upper edge, measuring 6.375" x 2.75".

A fine stipple engraved bust portrait of Calvin Coolidge at ¾ profile is mounted above the check; a gilt finished plaque engraved "Calvin Coolidge, 30th U.S. President of the United States, 1923-1929" is found below.

When Coolidge endorsed this check in the spring of 1918, he was in the throes of the Massachusetts gubernatorial race against Democratic candidate Richard H. Long and two other Socialist ticket candidates. Coolidge would secure the election five months later, in November 1918, by a narrow margin of 16,000 votes. During his administration, Governor Coolidge ably navigated through issues like Prohibition and women's suffrage, and even the 1919 Boston Police Strike.

Vermonter Calvin Coolidge moved to western Massachusetts to attend Amherst College. After graduating with high honors, Coolidge apprenticed at a nearby Northampton, Massachusetts law firm; he would live in the industrial center and college town the rest of his life. Coolidge set aside a successful commercial law practice to engage in politics, first as a William McKinley campaign aide, and then as a city councilman, state congressman and senator, and mayor of Northampton. He entered the national political arena after serving as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Massachusetts. "Silent Cal" was 29th U.S. President Warren G. Harding's running mate and assumed the presidency after Harding's death of a heart attack.
