Charles A. Lindbergh had delivered mail on the Chicago - Springfield - Peoria - St. Louis route, or Contact Air Mail Route 2, as an employee of the Robertson Aircraft Company for ten months in 1926-1927. When "Slim" Lindbergh flew his De Havilland D4 biplane up and down the Mississippi River Valley during this period, he was still a rather nondescript Midwestern air mail carrier. His record-breaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in May 1927 changed all that, rocketing him to instant celebrity. Lindbergh resumed his old mail route for two days in February 1928 in order to promote the fledgling air mail service. There was so much mail generated from this drive that multiple airplanes had to be used to fly the pieces between their destinations. Lindbergh drove each plane around the airfield so that mail could be branded as being flown by him, if only for a few moments. Although these horseshoe covers are not particularly unique, those signed by Lindbergh are quite desirable.
