Description:

C. Lindbergh Boldly Signed Syracuse, NY Dinner Menu 2 Months After Famous Transatlantic Crossing

A dinner menu from a celebratory banquet held on July 28, 1927 in Syracuse, New York by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, boldly inscribed and signed by pioneering aviator Charles A. Lindbergh (1902-1974), as "To Eleanor and Alice Worton / Sincerely / C.A. Lindbergh" over the portrait medallion at center. Isolated marginal wrinkles and a faded minor water stain in the lower right corner of the menu, else in remarkable condition. The menu is matted and framed behind glass in a handsome presentation. The mat is slightly sunburned towards the edges, else near fine. Not examined out of the frame. The sight size of the menu is 9.625" x 13" while the overall frame size is 15.25" x 19" x .75."

The Syracuse Chamber of Commerce banquet offered its guests a 6-course menu culminating in "Glace Lindbergh," or "Lindbergh Iced Cream." The name of this dessert was just one of many examples of "Lindbergh mania" sweeping the country after Lindbergh, a 25-year-old Midwestern air mail carrier, had rocketed to celebrity a few months earlier. Lindbergh's record-breaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927 had secured his fame as well as the Orteig Prize. Lindbergh was feted by enthusiastic European crowds, and soon after his return to the United States on June 11, 1927, he was treated to a New York City ticker tape parade.

Lindbergh did not rest on his laurels, instead launching directly into several publicity tours to promote the fledgling aviation and aeronautical industries. Between July 20 and October 23, 1927, Lindbergh conducted an exhausting 82-city tour of the contiguous United States. Lindbergh flew to Syracuse, New York on July 28, 1927 by way of Albany and Schenectady.

Lindbergh landed the "Spirit of St. Louis" at Syracuse's Amboy Airport on the afternoon of July 28, 1927. He then traveled via motorcade to Archbold Stadium on the campus of Syracuse University, where he briefly addressed crowds estimated at 25,000-30,000 people. Thursday, July 28, 1927 was proclaimed "Lindbergh Day" and several prominent city businesses released their workers at noon so that they could participate in the festivities. Lindbergh attended the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce banquet--probably at the newly opened Hotel Syracuse--that evening, where he was serenaded by a harp-accompanied all-male choral performance, and was presented with a china set manufactured by a local ceramics manufacturer, Onondaga Potteries.

Lindbergh helped found what would later become TWA in 1929, and legitimized the nascent American airline industry by developing rules and regs and even conducting publicity campaigns. In the 1930s, Lindbergh traveled around the world evaluating air power capabilities. Later, Lindbergh worked with Longines Watch Company to produce a navigation-friendly pilot's watch, and even invented a glass heart pump that facilitated heart surgery!
