C. Chiniquy, Influential Anti-Catholic, ALS Re: Potential Trip to England "in the great struggle against the… implacable foe of their rights…"
ALS

A lengthy autograph letter from Presbyterian minister and vehement anti-Catholic Charles Chiniquy, signed "C. Chiniquy" at conclusion. 2pp of a single sheet, measuring 8" x 10.5", Kankakee, IL, July 15, 1890. Addressed to "My Dear Brother in Christ", presumably an acquaintance from England, Chiniquy advises on the possibility of him embarking on a trip overseas. Exhibits moderate edge creasing and age toning throughout, with expected flattened folds. Evidence of prior mounting along top edge of verso resulting in slight paper loss. A near indiscernible closed tear is present near the lower right of signature. Overall good condition- content filled letter!

Reading in part:

"I am so happy to hear from you that there is a beginning of an awakening among the disciples of the Gospel in England against Romanism!
May the God of the Gospel grant that it spreads through all your grand Country.
I would have no objections against going again to England if I were invited by some of your public religious bodies…
…If my English friends think that I might help them in the great struggle against the most implacable foe of their rights, liberties, and Christianity, the expression of their desire to see me, for a few months, in the ranks and files of the soldiers whom the Captain of our Salvation has enrolled around his armies in England would be as an order from Heaven for me.
This is my answer to your friendly question, 'Is there any hope of your visiting England again?'
Though I would consider an act of folly on my part to offer myself to go again to work in England, I would find myself bound in conscience to accept such an invitation if it were coming from any of your representative Christian bodies."

Charles Paschal Telesphore Chiniquy (1809-1899) was a Canadian activist and former Catholic priest who, after leaving the church in 1858, converted to Protestant Christianity in 1860 and became a noted Evangelical minister. He would afterwards engage in speaking tours across the United States denouncing Catholicism as a Pagan religion. Chiniquy also warned of supposed plots by the Vatican to take control of the U.S. by importing Catholic immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and France, and suggested that the church was behind the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
