Burris Jenkins Jr. Original Political Cartoon "Richest Nation on Earth"
Art
An original Burris Jenkins Jr. hand drawn political cartoon entitled "Richest Nation on Earth". This cartoon depicts a crying baby amidst a room of toys and material possessions. The baby wears a onesie that reads "Stock Market Pessimist" and holds a toy labeled "Over Priced Stocks." At the top of the cartoon is a crossed off headline (possible title) reading "Poor Little Rich Boy!" Beneath the cartoon are notes written in an unknown hand concerning publication details.1p, measuring 11.25" x 14.5". With uneven edges and some minor loss and the top corner. Light soiling, toning, and foxing throughout.

Jenkins's cartoon critiques the economic inequality and excesses of the time, highlighting that even in a wealthy nation, some individuals still won't be satisfied. The crying baby, despite being surrounded by wealth, represents the pessimism and discontent of those who are materially well-off.

Burris Jenkins Jr. (1896-1966) was a war correspondent and newspaper editor. Jenkins Jr. was a popular sports cartoonist whose work appeared in the New York Journal-American from 1931. Despite being known for his themes on sport, Jenkins was also a skilled courtroom illustrator and editorial cartoonist. He was fired from his first job at the Kansas City Post for a series of pessimistic Christmas cartoons, which prompted his father's own resignation in solidarity. Among his most famous cartoons are his piece on the discovery of the Lindbergh baby and Babe Ruth's farewell to Yankee Stadium.
