One page with docket on back, 9.75” x 15.5”; Fort Arbuckle, Indian Territory; February 1870. A listing of expenditures for the month of February 1870, signed by Thomas M. Willing of the 6th Infantry. The Fort  would be shut down four months later, and was operating with reduced staff. The listing includes four line items, most notably the first item for “Enlisted men of 6th Infty. and 10th Cav. [for] Extra duty in Q.M. Dept. 135.60.” Printed form, engrossed in ink. Toning throughout, a bit darker at folds, with light wear thereat.

The 10th Cavalry was a segregated regiment of black soldiers established after the Civil War. The regiment was originally trained to fight, and participated with valor throughout the Indian Wars. They also saw action during the Spanish American War and the Philippine American War, but were eventually relegated to non-combat duty.

Fort Arbuckle was originally built in April 1851. It was established to protect the region's relocated Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes from raids by the Kiowa and Comanche. The fort was a key stop for wagon trains of settlers heading west. Fort Arbuckle was abandoned a few months after the date of this document upon the establishment of Fort Sill.
