Riggs. An opening on verso displays the endorsements of Buchanan, “John N. Lane,” and two others. Fine condition.

Harriet Lane (1830-1903) was the daughter of James Buchanan’s sister Jane Ann Buchanan Lane (1793-1839) and Virginia merchant Elliott Tole Lane (1784-1840). When her father died a year after her mother, her uncle James (“Nunc”) became her guardian. She later served as First Lady during her uncle’s presidency. John N. Lane was another uncle, her father’s brother.

In 1840, William Wilson Corcoran (1798-1888) and George Washington Riggs (1813-1881) formed Corcoran & Riggs which offered checking and depositing services. In 1844, the U.S. government assigned Corcoran & Riggs to be the only federal depository in Washington. When Corcoran retired in 1854, the bank changed its name to Riggs & Co. A patron of the arts, Corcoran gave his Washington gallery building and much of his art collection to the government; it was opened to the public in 1874 as the Corcoran Gallery.
