Bruce Lee's Own Lapel Pin, Original Jeet Kune Do with Yin-Yang Symbol

Beautiful Jeet Kune Do lapel pin, yellow, red and black on gray metal, designed by Bruce Lee to represent his newly developed martial arts discipline, .75" in diameter. A design based on the Taijitu symbol (referred to as the yin-yang in English). The Chinese characters read, "Using no way as way", and "Having no limitation as limitation", expressing his philosophy behind his discipline. In excellent condition.  Accompanied by impeccable provenance having been gifted to Herb Jackson directly by Bruce Lee (Jackson was Lee's original back yard student, close friend and confidant, and took an active role in improving Bruce Lee's training equipment), which was then gifted to Jackson's son by descent. The piece will include a letter of authenticity from his son, Mark Ashton-Jackson.

Bruce Lee, (Lee Jun-fan), was a Hong Kong and American actor, film director, martial artist, martial arts instructor, philosopher, and founder of the martial art Jeet Kune Do, one of the wushu or Kungfu styles. A virtual legend, Lee practiced his own style of Martial Arts but vehemently was opposed to having it considered yet another fixed or patterned martial art. He referred to Jeet Kune Do as "non-classical", suggesting that JKD is a form of Chinese Kung Fu, yet without form. Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned, and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. It was named for the Wing Chun concept of interception or attacking while one's opponent is about to attack. Jeet Kune Do practitioners believe in minimal movement with maximum effect.

Bruce Lee's philosophy on life mirrored his martial art style. A believer of fighting without fighting, no limitations, be like water"—move fluidly without hesitation, using no way as way. Bruce Lee’s philosophies have inspired millions of people the world over. He was a diligent journaler and made copious notes on his thoughts and ideas on how to live life to its fullest as well as on his martial expression. Bruce Lee also lived his philosophies believing that philosophies are meant to be applied not just pondered. Though his philosophies are numerous, there are several that are core to his outlook on life and martial arts. (see below) Many books on his philosophical thoughts and the inspirational way he lived his life have been published posthumously:

Be Water, My Friend.

Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation

Always be yourself; express yourself; have faith in yourself.

When I look around, I always learn something and that is to be always yourself, and to express yourself, to have faith in yourself. Do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Start from the very root of your being, which is “how can I be me?”

Under the sky, under the heavens, there is but one family.

Be a practical dreamer backed by action.

To change with change is the changeless state.

Research your own experience. Absorb what is useful Reject what is useless. Add what is essentially your own.

The Yin/Yang symbolism on the pin represents how the forces in the universe are in constant motion. As the movement continues, each of the forces of energy gradually changes into the other, yin to yang and yang to yin. This is the cycle of all energy. Yin/Yang represent the two halves that together complete wholeness. Yin and yang are also the starting point for change. When something is whole, by definition, it’s unchanging and complete. So when you split something into two halves – yin/yang, it upsets the equilibrium of wholeness. Both halves are chasing after each other as they seek a new balance with each other. Neither Yin nor Yang is absolute. Nothing is completely Yin or completely Yang. Each aspect contains the beginning point for the other aspect. For example, day becomes night and then night becomes day. Yin and Yang are interdependent upon each other so that the definition of one requires the definition for the other to be complete. Yin Yang is not static. The nature of Yin and Yang flows and changes with time. A simple example is thinking about how the day gradually flows into the night. However, the length of day and night are changing. As the earth ages, its spin is slowing causing the length of day and night to get longer. Day and night are not static entities.

This beautiful pin was worn by this master and will be accompanied by a detailed letter of authenticity and provenance stating "This lapel pin was given directly to Herb Jackson from Bruce Lee. Herb Jackson was a close friend, student and confident of Bruce Lee. Herb Jackson handed this down to his son, Mark Ashton-Jackson" with the Letter of Authenticity noting " … This item was given to my father Herb Jackson as a gift from Bruce Lee in and around 1968. My father Herb Jackson was a very close friend and confidant of Bruce Lee and was also one of his private backyard students in Los Angeles in the mid to late 1960's. This item was used by Bruce Lee and is documented in many photos and magazines. It was a part of Bruce Lee's training regime and helped better him physically. This item is historical in nature and marks a point in time when Bruce Lee was seeking international fame for this martial arts/film career."
