Brown University and Harvard Law School Archive 61 pp. 1841-84

This archive includes diplomas and memorabilia from the college career of William S. Barton, the son of a judge who became an attorney himself. It also includes memoranda penned by him and his father of trips in 1847 to western Virginia and in 1854 to Washington, D.C., among other documents from Barton's life and career.

Among other items, the archive contains:
• Program for an Exhibition by the Senior Class, Brown University, December 2, 1843, including a presentation by William Sumner Barton on "The Antiquities of Central America";
• Two diplomas from Brown University, September 4, 1844, September 1, 1847, both signed by President Francis Wayland (1796-1865);
• Certificate for the Jackson Premium for the best dissertation on moral philosophy, September 4, 1844, signed by President Francis Wayland;
• Program for Annual Commencement of Brown University, September 4, 1844, including a disquisition by William Sumner Barton on "The Prospects of American Sculpture";
• Certificate that William S. Barton was a student at the Law Institution in Harvard University from March 1, 1845, to January 17, 1846, signed by Law Professor Simon Greenleaf (1783-1853);
• A handwritten, 13-page memorandum about a trip to natural mineral springs in southwestern Virginia, in the summer of 1847 (including observations about the U.S. capitol and Monticello), written by William S. Barton or his father Ira M. Barton;
• A handwritten, 16-page memorandum about a trip to Washington by Ira M. Barton, May 1854;
• Constitution of the Harvard Musical Association, of which William S. Barton was elected a member in January 1852, together with a letter informing him of his election;
• Appointment of William S. Barton as a Notary Public, March 15, 1859, signed by Massachusetts Governor and future Union General Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894); and
• An article entitled "A 'Gala Day' at Brown University, written by William S. Barton and published in the Worcester Daily Spy (MA) in March 1864.

William Sumner Barton (1824-1899) was born in Massachusetts, the oldest son of Probate Judge Ira M. Barton (1798-1867) and his wife Maria Bullard Barton (1800-1883). William S. Barton graduated from Brown University in 1844 with his bachelor's degree and in 1847 with his master's degree. In 1845 and 1846, he attended Harvard Law School and gained admission to the bar. He practiced law in Worcester, Massachusetts, for several years before working with the Bank of Commerce in Boston. In 1849, he married Ann Elizabeth Jennison (1827-1869). After her death, he married Katharine Ellery (1840-1916) in 1870. He served as treasurer of the City of Worcester from 1872 to months before his death in 1899.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
