Broughton's Monthly Readers: Lincoln, Douglas, Breckinridge, Bell
Pamphlet/Booklet
Four issues of Broughton's Monthly Planet Reader and Astrological Journal. Philadelphia: L. D. Broughton, 1860. Vol. 1, No. 5, 6, 7, 8. Runs approximately 7pp, measuring 5.7" x 9". At center of cover is an engraved bust portrait of the candidate, surrounded by their astrological chart. Includes commentary on the candidate's potential success, current news, and advertisements. Expected wear includes toning, minor soiling and dampstaining. String holes from binding, some pages detached. Some small tears and chipping to edges. Else, very good to near fine condition.

Each issue features one of the four major candidates for the 1860 presidential election: Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) for the Republican party; John Bell (1796-1869) for the Constitutional Union Party; John C. Breckinridge (1821-1875) for the Southern Democrats; and Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) for the Northern Democrats.

While the platforms of the various parties discussed issues such as a national tariff, the Homestead Act, and a transcontinental railroad, the main issue dominating the campaign was slavery. The Democratic Party was split over the issue of slavery. The Republican Party was morally opposed to slavery; Lincoln said, "...if slavery is not wrong, nothing is..." The Constitutional Union Party took very few positions on anything, desperate to keep the country from tearing apart.

Lincoln won the Electoral College with less than forty percent of the popular vote nationwide. Unlike every preceding president-elect, he did not carry even one slave state; he instead carried all eighteen free states exclusively. Like Lincoln, Breckinridge and Bell won no electoral votes outside of their respective sections. While Bell retired to his family business, quietly supporting his state's secession, Breckinridge served as a Confederate general. Douglas was the only candidate who won electoral votes in both slave and free states. His support was the most widespread geographically; he finished second behind Lincoln in the popular vote.

Luke Dennis Broughton (1828-1898) was born in England to a family of astrologers. He moved to the United States in the 1840s to study natural medicine at the Eclectic Medical College in Philadelphia. His book, "The Elements of Astrology", was the first serious astrology book published in the United States.
